Location 3: Hemis Monastery

45 kilometers from the city of Leh, the 11th century Hemis Monastery is an iconic Himalayan Buddhist monastery of the Drukpa sect of Mahayana Buddhism, resting on a mountain along the west bank of river Indus. One of the largest and most famous Buddhist monasteries in Ladakh, it is known for a collection of Buddhist relics and several ancient items like paintings, weapons, etc. Out of all this, the most striking feature of the monastery is the tall statue of Buddha looking out at the valley; also considered the wealthiest in the region.
